Blake Softball Has An Exceptional Season

The Blake Softball Team had another outstanding season under head coach Nicole Wallace.

The Bengals finished 10-5 overall in regular season play and were 6-0 in conference play. They had some very dominating wins including a 26-6 win against Wheaton ,a 32-5 win over Watkins Mill, and a 22-2 victory over rival Springbrook.

The team was led by senior pitcher and first baseman Nicole Kidwiler’s 17 runs, which included two home runs at bat and 42 strikes on the mound. Junior Gwenyth Deitz contributed nine runs to the team as well.

A very big strength this year for the team was that Coach Wallace and the team agreed on is their excellent team chemistry. “The team chemistry is the best it has ever been. New players are stepping up in new positions at key times,” Coach Wallace said.

“We had a rough year last year, so coming back and having a good team chemistry and really liking each other, being there for each other on the field and in school. It’s really good,” Kidwiler adds on the team chemistry.

An important piece of playing a sport is having a high IQ for the game. Coach Wallace believes that the team has a high IQ for the game of softball and their knowledge and instincts gave them the edge over other teams.

To add to the team's knowledge, Coach Wallace and the team work together to scout their opponents before their games. They look to see which players on the opposing teams are returning and which left. Then they are able to figure out whether the opposing team is a strong hitting team at the plate or whether they have strong pitchers on the mound. Kidwiler believes that this really helps the team during games.

The team’s first playoff game is Monday, May 14th at home, at 6 PM. Come out and support the Bengals during their postseason run.

“We really have to stay up. We have to work hard... I think that we will be successful. We have to play every game like it’s our last,” Kidwiler says.
